These, extra sloppy and full of flavor, Stump Jump Sloppy Joes are perfect for busy week nights AND chill weekends. Growing up, sloppy joes always followed a busy day of school, after school activities and various sports practices. It was the go-to meal for mom to have dinner on the table in 20 minutes for the hungry family. I lean on this classic meal with modern flavors for busy nights to fill hungry bellies too! Perfectly crumbled ground meat mixture, onions and Athletic Brew Non-Alcoholic Beer to flavor it all makes for a sloppy Joe that won’t disappoint.

At first glance, it may look like a long list of ingredients. But, if you break it down it’s five fresh ingredients and a mix of pantry staple spices and sauces. It’s not all that bad for a quick dinner fix!

Classic Sloppy Joes with modern flavor.

Sloppy joes were a staple in my house growing up. If memory serves me correctly, it was ground beef, ketchup and a few seasonings to make the meat mixture. Now, there is nothing against the simple sloppy Joe mash. I lived on it and looked forward to it as a kid. We are changing up quite a few things here! Let’s break it down…

First, skip the ground beef. Nothing against ground beef, we love it and use it often. Since we use it often for other recipes, I find the freezer to always have a stash of the other grounds (turkey and pork) in abundance. One day, I decided to mix them and use them together. The lean turkey combined with the fatty and flavorful pork make such an amazing combo.

Next, bring the flavor! Layering up sweet from maple syrup and heat from jalapeños, chili powder, cayenne pepper and hot sauce. Not to mention the tang from dried mustard and the saltiness of Worcestershire sauce. This dish hits all the flavor notes!

Lastly, add a splash of beer! This lively brew is full of notes like caramel and has a crisp, smooth finish. Toasty, nutty, and bounding with flavor, it’s a brew worth chasing down whenever it’s in season. It’s malty and slightly hoppy, perfect for adding to this dish and ideal for sipping alongside a big serving.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Heat a large cast iron skillet over medium heat, add the olive oil.
  2. When the oil shimmers, add the ground turkey and pork. Spread the meat out evenly and then refrain from pushing it around for 2-3 minutes to develop a crust.
  3. Once the meat has browned on one side, begin to break it up into small bits and cook until no pink remains, about 5 minutes.
  4. Add the onion, jalapeño and garlic to the meat. Stir and cook for about 2-3 minutes.
  5. Add the Stump Jump Athletic Brew beer to deglaze the pan and use a wooden spoon to scrape the bottom of the cast iron.
  6. Add the ketchup, maple syrup, chili powder, dry mustard, cayenne and hot sauce to the meat and mix well to combine. Cook on low heat for 5-7 minutes to reduce.
  7. Taste and season with salt and pepper as needed. 
  8. Lastly, add the Worcestershire sauce to the pan, stir and remove the pan from the heat.
  9. Serve hot on sourdough or potato buns.
